Heater cores are generally located under the dash inside the car on the passenger side. It's not hard to change but it is full of coolant. So take precautions if it truly needs to be changed. If your warning lite came on on it's probably not the core. Check your radiator fluid and thermostat first. Those are the first and easier quick fixes to check. Heater core going bad, leaking coolant...how long can I drive my car safely until it gets fixed?
My 2002 Chevy Cavalier was leaking coolant and I found out today at the oil change place, it's leaking from the heater core, and it's cracked, meaning that's the problem. I'm only just topping off my car with coolant every 2 days until I am able to get the problem fixed (friday) but is it ok to drive my car around until then, as long as I keep the coolant level up and don't use my heat or air in my car??Heater core going bad, leaking coolant...how long can I drive my car safely until it gets fixed?

As long as you dont lets your engien run out of, or too low on coolant, it will not effect yoru engine.
Obviously you will be leakign coolant onto your floorboard in yoru car, which is anoying, to stop this, you can bypass your heater core by redoing the hoses that goto it, it fairly simple to do, and the end result will be you will not have heat in your car untill you replace the heater core, and reconnect the hoses.
Its springtime, and you really shoudlnt need your heat for several months, so i thing this is your best option. Also heater cores are very labor intensive to replace.

Drain the coolant out of the heater core.
Tie off the hoses running to your heater core.
(find the 2 hoses that run to your heater core, there should be an inlet and outlet. Now drain some of your coolant down so it doesnt leak out.
Then pop off ONE of the hoses on your heater core, run a syphon pump thru down into your heater core, drain all the coolant out.
Now take that one hose and tie it to the other Inlet or Outlet of the heatercore....so that its just loope, not running down to your engine.
Now do basically the same thing with your engine, so the hoses ARENT running to the heatercore, so it wont be constantly pumping in coolant. You may need to run to autozone or advanceautoparts to buy a longer piece of hose in order to plug off the Engine Side of it....just make sure to take a piece of hose with you so you get the right diameter hose, also measure how long of hose you will need, then goto the store and they will cut you the right size piece of hose.
Ive seen people do this before, it works definately.

for starters, you're going to need to change over refrigerant from old R-12 to R134a. The R-12 is hard to find and way too expensive. check with a local shop to see if they can recover the refrigerant from the system for you. then after you have completed heater core change out, have then charge the system with R134a. it will cost you a bit up front, but once the change over is done you'll be set for quite a while. My friends have a 2000 Ford Taurus. They have not had heat for a while now. They have changed the thermostat, flushed the heater core and they know that everything is going through the heater core properly. I have the suspicion that the temperature control door inside the heater/air-conditioning box is stuck to the A/C setting. Your thinking is right, they have a tsb out for a blend door sticking and it's an not an easy job, sometimes you can sneak your hand up there and move it by hand, the prob is the door warps and sticks in the passage to hard for the arm to move it. I have a 1995 Ford Contour GL, 2.0 that I believe needs a heater core. I don't have time right now to replace it, so I am wondering about how much it would cost for parts and labor for the replacement. The dash does not need to be taken out, however the center console and shifter assembly does (without tearing apart wires and effing the overdrive). I have removed the dash board but can not seem to find bolts for firewall side removal. I have a 2000 chevy blazer two wheel drive. My heater core is bad and I need to change it but I'm having trouble getting it out please help.How do I remove and reinstall heater core in my 2000 chevy blazer?
There are none on the firewall side. You have to kind of just do it blind. 1/4 inch drive with swivel and extension. I think they are 7mm. Sorry, I know that's a real *****. Good luck.
